Ringo Peace

Everybody's second-favorite living ex-Beatle is in Chicago for his birthday today, and he's asking everyone in the entire world for a birthday gift: to flash a peace sign at high noon. What a cool idea! Asking the world to think about peace at the same time is very simple, and since I figure I might never get to give Ringo an actual gift, this is as close as I'll ever get. And it's so thoughtful, too!

According to some commentaries, the "V-sign" peace sign is derogatory or denotes war-mongering. But Ringo came from the Peace Movement of the 1960's, which has reclaimed it to stand for love and brotherhood. Since then, the concept of peace has undergone incredible evolutions in various circles, as anyone who has ever visited the Middle-East probably knows. So what's my definition of "peace"? I'm not exactly sure, but I think Ringo said it best, "it don't come easy." I'll bet that was Ringo's point in doing this. That's what I'll be thinking about at noon today. I'll also be thinking about Shining Time Station.

So I'll definitely be joining the Peaceniks of the world at noon today. And Ringo's even in the same time zone as me. How cool is that!
